City Walk BHAM: What You're Actually Getting Into

City Walk BHAM is not your standard Birmingham park, and once you're on-site you'll understand why an evening here tends to run longer than you planned. The skatepark ranks among the five largest in the country. There are 10 pickleball courts, a 50,000-square-foot dog park, an outdoor roller rink, a playground, a full amphitheater, and a bar service area called the SOCIAL. You can fill an entire evening here and still have options left.

Timing matters this summer. The FISE World Series action sports festival takes over City Walk BHAM on August 7-9, 2026, bringing world-class athletes, 3v3 basketball, live music, and street food to the venue. On nights like that, the on-site lots switch to event parking with attendants at the entrances, and the 9th Avenue street spots don't last. Arrive before 7 p.m. if you want a real shot at on-street parking.

The Drive In from Hoover and Bessemer

If you're coming north on I-65 from Hoover or cutting in from Bessemer on I-20/59, you'll drop into downtown and work through a few blocks of one-way streets before you reach 9th Avenue North. Those blocks throw tight turn lanes, abrupt lane changes, and parallel spots that a longer vehicle handles awkwardly. The 2026 Kicks has an overall length of 171.9 inches and a turning diameter of 34.8 feet, both published in Nissan's 2026 specs. The on-street spots on 9th Avenue North use ParkMobile, the same app you'll find across much of downtown Birmingham. A 171.9-inch vehicle is shorter than a Honda CR-V (which runs 184.8 inches) and slips into spots that a mid-size crossover circles and gives up on. And they're timed. Compact matters here.

Why the Kicks Works (and One Thing It Doesn't)

The Kicks works for downtown Birmingham nights because it's sized for the streets you'll actually drive, though there's a clear tradeoff worth naming up front. The 2026 Kicks runs a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that Nissan rates at 141 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission. For a summer evening downtown, that's entirely adequate. You're navigating surface streets, not merging hard onto I-459 in traffic. The EPA rates the FWD Kicks at 28 city and 35 highway, so a week of downtown evenings keeps the fuel cost genuinely low.

So where does it fall short? If your regular commute is a long highway stretch with frequent passing moves, the CVT can feel strained under hard acceleration, and that's a real limitation. For mixed city and surface-street driving, it doesn't surface. If highway performance is your priority, the Nissan Rogue is a better conversation to have with us.

For City Walk nights specifically, two things matter beyond size. First, Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard on every single 2026 Kicks trim, covering automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane departure warning.
